Hearing Aids for the Islands
We are very excited to announce that we are currently accepting second hand aids to be reconditioned and taken to the Pacific Islands to be fitted to local residents. If you have hearing aids you wish to donate, please drop them in to your local Bay Audiology clinic.
"Shoeboxes of Love"
Bay Audiology has been supporting the "Shoe Boxes of Love" initiative, set up following the Christchurch earthquake. These are shoe boxes filled with 'feel good' gender and age specific gifts which are being collected and distributed to affected people in Christchurch. As a community minded organisation, Bay Audiology clinics have become drop off points for the boxes, which are regularly collected by a Rotary representative and distributed to those who need them most. If you would like to donate a box, please do drop into one of our clinics.
The Gift of Hearing
Hearing problems affect about one in every 10 New Zealanders and for those living with hearing loss, life can sometimes feel quite isolating and lonely. As a community-minded organisation, we decided it was time to give some much-deserved help to New Zealanders for whom hearing aids were just that little bit out of reach. This community-based initiative was aptly named the Gift of Hearing.
The Gift of Hearing project began in November 2009 via a radio campaign that asked Kiwis to nominate their family, friends and loved ones for the opportunity to win one of five sets of hearing aids. A personalised letter was sent out to GPs nationwide and an online banner campaign to allow GPs and people at home to nominate a friend or family member or even themselves. This campaign struck a real chord, the nominations rolled in: we received over 3500 visits to our website and over 500 entries in four weeks.
What became clear very quickly was that hearing loss affects an extremely diverse group of people – not just the elderly. Our nominees ranged from young musicians, to people who had suffered hearing loss as a result of workplace noise, to people who simply couldn’t afford to see a hearing specialist..
After many hours of difficult deliberation, five winners from around the country were chosen to receive the Gift of Hearing. The winners are now in the process of having their new hearing aids fitted, tested and refined. A couple of the recipients are already up and running and the feedback has been consistent and unanimously positive: Bay Audiology has helped to change the lives of five New Zealanders by giving them the ultimate gift, the Gift of Hearing.
We would like to congratulate the following Gift of Hearing winners:
- Shane J. of Hamilton
- Benjami H. of Dunedin
- Lauryn A. of West Auckland
- John E. of Kaiapoi
