Help for NZ medical practitioners to detect hearing loss

Latest studies show that one in ten New Zealanders suffers from hearing loss. Furthermore, they wait an average of seven years before doing anything about it. Bay Audiology has recently developed a practical new tool called the Bay AudioCHEK Pro^® to make hearing detection accessible for all New Zealanders.

 

Bay Audiology has offered to donate Bay AudioCHEK Pros^® to all GPs around New Zealand in order to help them detect hearing problems their patients may be suffering from. Hearing loss is a chronic condition among adults of all ages, and it’s well recognised that hearing loss gets worse as we age. More than 30 per cent of individuals over 65 suffer some type of hearing loss, 14 per cent of those between 45 and 64 also have hearing loss and more than half of all hearing impaired persons are under the age of 65 years.

 

Hearing loss is also on the increase in younger people. One reason for this trend is how long young people are wearing their MP3 players – and at what volume they’re listening to them. Over the last ten years, the percentage of seven year olds with hearing loss has increased 2.8 times and the hearing loss in 13 year olds has risen over four times.
