Help for NZ medical practitioners to detect hearing loss

Latest studies show that one in ten New Zealanders suffers from hearing loss. Furthermore, they wait an average of seven years before doing anything about it. Bay Audiology has recently developed a practical new tool called the Bay AudioCHEK Pro® to make hearing detection accessible for all New Zealanders.

Bay Audiology has offered to donate Bay AudioCHEK Pros® to all GPs around New Zealand in order to help them detect hearing problems their patients may be suffering from. Hearing loss is a chronic condition among adults of all ages, and it’s well recognised that hearing loss gets worse as we age. More than 30 per cent of individuals over 65 suffer some type of hearing loss, 14 per cent of those between 45 and 64 also have hearing loss and more than half of all hearing impaired persons are under the age of 65 years.

Hearing loss is also on the increase in younger people. One reason for this trend is how long young people are wearing their MP3 players – and at what volume they’re listening to them. Over the last ten years, the percentage of seven year olds with hearing loss has increased 2.8 times and the hearing loss in 13 year olds has risen over four times.

“Bay Audiology is committed to helping GPs detect and treat hearing loss in patients of any age. We believe that hearing loss is an important issue in New Zealand and we are taking steps to help detect these problems in the early stages by providing GPs with an Bay AudioCHEK Pro®,” says Scott Wright, Audiologist and Director of Bay Audiology.

The Bay AudioCHEK Pro® is a simple, 40-second screening device that gives an accurate measure in detecting hearing problems even in the early stages. Early intervention allows sufferers to be thoroughly checked and assessed for hearing aids, preventing needless problems in the future, and ultimately providing your patients with a better quality of life.

Developed by audiologists, the updated version of the Bay Hearing Screener® provides rapid and effective screening of hearing impairment in patients. The new model has been upgraded according to feedback from a recent survey of 345 New Zealand GPs.

The new Bay AudioCHEK Pro® features:
  • Longer battery life (approx. 5 years, depending on the frequency of use) and ease in changing batteries
  • Low battery indicator
  • Improved acoustic shielding due to double ear enclosure. This also allows binaural testing and no need to reposition the screening device
  • Even more accurate output to within 1.5dB
  • The new Bay AudioCHEK Pro® only takes 40 seconds to test both ears!
Bay Audiology still has a limited number of Bay AudioCHEK Pro® for New Zealand medical practitioners, so if you’d like to request one for your practice, please email us
